Chesky is primarily a fursuit character, built around a partial suit made by Lazylupe.

He's a stockily-built Siberian husky (Siberian in both breed and nationality) with a strong gothic/industrial aesthetic. As much as he tries to look edgy and intimidating, he's still undeniably doggish.
When I saw this in the 2015 Intex catalogue, I got really excited. The smaller version is one of my absolute favourite inflatables, so a larger one seemed like a great move.

It is indeed an excellent toy, but it has two main downsides; firstly, it has a huge warning label on the lower half of the body. Secondly, it uses matte vinyl instead of gloss like on the smaller version. It's still a lot of fun, and the placement of the handles on this one is much less obtrusive.

Posted on 17 Jan 2015 in Inflatables - Link to post

Briar - Deer-Fox Hybrid
2014-04-06T20:26:18Z
2014-04-06T20:26:18Z

Briar is one of my alts; you could call him a 'murrsona' since I created him to appear in adult situations that didn't suit my main characters.

He's an anthro deer-fox, a cross between a white-tailed deer and a red fox. He takes his fur pattern and colour scheme directly from Cyrin's pool toy form. This was done intentionally so that when the character appeared in art, it would be easy to tell who he belonged to :)

Briar is definitely gay, and isn't afraid to act camp or effeminate. He shares all of Cyrin's kinks, but without any of the inhibitions. He's a bit of a slut, and will try just about anything with anyone. Definitely not the 'settling-down' type!

Posted on 6 Apr 2014 in Characters - Link to post

IW Gryphon

2014-02-23T18:18:48Z

Another custom-designed toy produced in low-to-medium quantities by InflatableWorld. I believe that this design was developed by Rovanoak.

Given the price point of the toy (83 EUR, ex-VAT), the build quality is lower than that of other custom inflatables, but still pretty solid. The use of thinner vinyl does, however, make the toy rather more fragile. One can sit on its back quite happily, though, so it's really not too bad at all.

The combination of thin vinyl and a high volume to surface area ratio means that it is more sensitive to changes in air temperature, so i've found myself having to top up the air every day or two.

Overall, though, it's a great-looking toy with some nice detailing and a really impressive size. Most of all, it's extremely affordable and therefore very accessible to collectors and hobbyists alike.

Posted on 23 Feb 2014 in Inflatables - Link to post

Wolfdog

2014-01-07T23:45:42Z

A petite custom inflatable that's extremely well-built and lots of fun :)

This is the first toy from Hiro Inflates, a joint venture between Hiro Husky and Trainman, with some manufacturing assistance from G&G. Originally available for pre-order in August 2011, the project went through many delays and iterations of the design before the final toys were shipped in June 2013.

My favourite feature of this toy has to be the vinyl it's made from. It's quite unlike any other material i've encountered before; despite being thick, strong and robust, it's extremely soft and flexible, almost impossibly so. The size is another point of attraction too; finally, a custom toy that doesn't take up an entire room!

There are 2 main drawbacks to this toy, however; firstly, the valve is very tight. I often worry about damaging the toy whenever I open and close it. Secondly, when you look at his face from front-on, on just the right inclination, he bears a striking resemblance to Grumpy Cat.

All in all, though, it's a great toy and one i'm very happy to have in my collection :)

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Inflatables - Link to post

PuffyPaws Sea Dragon

A massive, most excellent toy that is probably PuffyPaws' most water-friendly toy so far!

Commissioned by Baphnedia, the design is simple and elegant, with no nasty sharp edges. It capitalises on sheer size and volume, allowing its owner to ride very high off the ground, elevated high above the water.

It's cute, very huggable and, perhaps most importantly, freakin' enormous :) When I saw the prototype for this toy in Florida back in early 2013, I just knew I had to have one! It comes with my highest recommendations :D

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Inflatables - Link to post

Telson - Intex® Lobster
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z
2014-08-31T13:44:06Z

Introducing Telson, the anthro Intex® lobster! It's not often a character's species includes a registered trademark in its name, but this pinchy fellow is undoubtedly and unashamedly based on a real pool toy design.

I've been developing this character for a while now, and this is the first definitive reference for him. Some noteworthy details:

His claws inflate separately from the rest of his body. This means that he can puff his claws up to appear bigger and more intimidating (at least in so far as an inflatable lobster can be intimidating).

Two little blue whiskery/moustachy vinyl flaps adorn either side of his mouth. Because they can.

His noodley-looking feelers are inflatable as well, although they tend to bob and creak around rather than actually serve a useful purpose.

Three webbed vestigial legs running down his torso bring him up to the required number to qualify as a decapod. He can wiggle these a bit, but they're mostly for show. You have to admit, they look pretty cool.

He's built to be steady on his feet, hence his legs are like two enormous traffic cones. The flat, flared bases provide excellent stability and give him the sort of commanding presence that only 1960's-styled moon boots can achieve.

He gives the impression of having a segmented body, thanks to a generous set of horizontal baffles that run down his torso and tail. These terminate in a spectacular cloverleaf tailfin.

Deviating slightly from the design of the pool toy he's based on, his dominant markings are like blue and white paint splatters, adorning his back, tail, thighs, and claw-tops.

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Characters - Link to post

Melinda "Clover" - Friesian Dairy Cow
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z
<img src="http://www.inflatophin.com/art/image/297/thumb" title="Melinda "Clover" - Friesian Dairy Cow" />
Clover (formally Melinda, but tends to go by her second name) is my female alt, and as such she represents my feminine side to some extent. She also embodies my love of all things bovine (and, by extension, all things uddery). She's quiet, but unashamed. Voluptuous, but dainty. Harmless, but able to defend herself.

She's not without her kinks either; while they are largely interchangeable with Cyrin's, she is more likely to stumble into situations involving lactation, milking, weight gain and, curiously, plushification.

Importantly, Clover is not a female version of Cyrin, she's not Cyrin if he transformed into a cow, and she has a life of her own. She might sometimes be seen with Cyrin, but they don't follow each other around and I wouldn't say that they share much more than a quiet acknowledgement that they have something in common.

Some important details about Clover:

She's based on the Friesian breed of dairy cow.

She stands at around 6ft tall. For a digitigrade character, this makes her slightly below-average in height.

She has a small set of horns. Yes, females of many breeds of cattle have horns. Some farmers surgically remove them, which seems rather cruel.

She has both anterior and posterior mammaries (i.e. breasts and udders), however her 'breasts' are non-functional and are simply there to add to her figure.

Her hands are three-fingered, opposable hooves; while her feet are ordinary digitigrade hind hooves.

The spot over her left eye is perhaps her most distinguishing feature.

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Characters - Link to post

Sahyris Piscari - Feral Merman
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z

Sahyris (who i've tentatively given the surname Piscari) - pronounced /sɑrˈrɪs pɪskɑri/ - is a complex and often misunderstood character; not only by his nature but also by his species. The most elegant description for what he is would be a "feral merman". Other terms would include anthro fish, mer-creature or even fish monster. While his form may lack a unified designation, its features are clear:

His overall appearance combines the traits of a large pelagic fish species with those of merfolk. He has the familiar "mermaid tail" with a broad horizontal fin, with a humanoid upper body and a very fishy-looking face.

His body is covered in large cycloid fish scales, with a subtle slimy coating.

Fins adorn most of his features, most notably running down his spine and the sides of his tail. Each is a row of webbed spines (which start out fleshy and come to a more rigid, sharp point at the tip). They may or may not be venomous. The webbing is lightweight, translucent and tattered in a few places.

He has less of a muzzle and more of a fishy 'snout' that starts above eye-level. His eyes are big, vacant and unblinking, but allude to an intelligence deeper within. He respires through gills running down his neck. He possesses the ability to pump blood into his gills, causing them to flare out and attain a greater surface area; something which allows him to exist out of water for a short length of time.

He is most definitely carnivorous. In his natural habitat, he preys on smaller fish and other sea creatures.

His hands are primarily a source of propulsion through the water, and as such are a little unwieldy for any other purpose. He has a crude level of manual dexterity.

As a secondary fursona, Sahyris represents the darker side of my personality. He balances the bouncy, social, fun-loving inflatable dolphin for the times in my life when i'm feeling grumpy, bitter, solitary and sadistic. While Cyrin always aspires to be a better pool toy, Sahyris has no motivation or incentive to better himself, instead preferring to remain antisocial, alone and (in the eyes of some) repulsive.

Sahyris doesn't have any particular back-story, but I have given some thought to how he fits into his own universe; his species is solitary and sparse - in fact, he may have never seen another of his kind before. His habitat is the open ocean, so he would be unfamiliar with most terrestrial creatures. The spelling of his name reflects how I imagine a fish person would talk; raspy, snake-like and slightly strained.

Sexually, Sahyris resembles a male fish. A pair of anal fins skirt his cloaca, whose function is to fertilise the eggs of a female, not to participate in intercourse. When he is associated with anything kinky, it's almost always related to transformation or devolution.

Occasionally, you may see Sahyris in an alternate form with legs instead of (or in addition to) a tail - i'm still trying to decide how this fits into the overall concept of the character.

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Characters - Link to post

Cyrin Inflatophin - Inflatable Common Dolphin Pool Toy
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z
2023-10-02T12:49:01Z

Cyrin (pronounced 'psy-rinn') is an anthro inflatable pool toy, based on a common dolphin. He is made entirely from medium gauge, glossy, translucent grey vinyl. He has a distinctive yellow stripe across each eye, similar markings running down his body, as well as flushes of blue towards his tail. His belly, like this other markings, is painted with opaque white ink.

There are two valves on his body, indicating two separate air chambers; one on his belly which inflates his body, and the other on the underside of his tailfluke, which inflates his tail. When fully inflated, he stands at just over 5ft tall. He has a pair of soft blue plastic handles on either side of his puffy dorsal fin, which can be used for riding in water - something he absolutely adores.

As a living toy, he has some mobility when optimally inflated (not too much air and not too little, both of which cause him to lose mobility quickly) and can get around by himself. However, being inflatable, he has virtually no strength, often crumpling and squashing against things he comes up against.

Cyrin is bouncy, squeaky, excitable and fun-loving. He enjoys splashing around in the pool and soaking up the summer sun.

He is not an anatomically correct toy. He is vulnerable to damage, and would have to be patched or repaired if punctured. Serious damage would result in death. He has no throat and thus cannot eat or drink - but does not need to, either.

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Characters - Link to post

Cyrin (non-squeaky) - Common Dolphin
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z
2014-01-07T22:16:43Z

Although I live out the bulk of my furry existence as an inflatable toy, I do have a regular, fleshy, anthro dolphin side as well.

So, some noteworthy details about non-squeaky Cyrin:

His colours and patterns are slightly more plausible for a flesh-and-blood creature, and more closely resemble those of his species, the Common Dolphin (delphinus delphis)

While he retains the two-toed feet of his inflatable form, he has a more practical hand design, with 3 webbed digits and an opposable thumb.

Unconstrained by the limitations of toy design and cost of manufacturing, he has a more natural body shape with more noticeably cetacean traits.

He stands at a rather humble 6ft/180cm tall, which is small for a bottlenose dolphin and about average for a common dolphin.

In this form, Cyrin is semi-aquatic, spending roughly half of his time in water (be it the ocean or his own private salt-water pool). His skin is not as prone to drying out as a feral dolphin's, but he becomes uncomfortable after about 12 hours without getting wet. True to his species, he does not have a sense of smell, however his sense of taste is more highly-developed than that of most cetaceans. On land, he can talk using his blowhole, soft palate and tongue (although his voice is quite squeaky) - and underwater, he communicates using sonar/echolocation. He weighs enough to be neutrally buoyant in the water but, thanks to strong muscles, he is not uncomfortable on land.

Posted on 7 Jan 2014 in Characters - Link to post

Possibly the first custom inflatable animal made available within the inflatables community, the Palomino still stands up well against the toys that have come since.

While it may not be as strong, tactile or as easy to inflate as other custom toys, it's still impressive to look at, and more than easy to snuggle :)

Mine was kept in storage for a long time and sold by Chunksta on eBay; it shows only small signs of long-term storage (valve imprint on reverse side, a few tiny spots of mildew) and has had its main body valve two-wayed, but is otherwise in factory condition.

Posted on 6 Aug 2012 in Inflatables - Link to post

IW/Alexia Stitch

2014-01-07T23:54:40Z

Simply put, the IW Stitch is massive. Not just in height, but also in sheer volume. This toy easily takes the longest of any in my collection to fully inflate; and even with an electric pump, it's still tedious!

The Stitch is, in fact, a re-colour of IW's chipmunk toy; aside from artwork, the two toys are identical. The thin vinyl makes this toy somewhat delicate, although i've yet to have any structural problems with mine.

One thing this toy does excel at, rather surprisingly, is stability in the water. With the tail deflated, this guy can flop on his back and provide a lounging surface so stable that you could easily fall asleep on it :)

All in all, a fun toy, but definitely a novelty.

Posted on 4 Jun 2012 in Inflatables - Link to post

Cyrin/PuffyPaws Cow
2010-05-03T18:17:30Z
2014-01-03T17:48:05Z

This is the result of my own project, working with PuffyPaws Toys (and therefore Jet Creations) and the artist Rawr. I wanted to create a limited-run, custom-designed inflatable cow that addressed the shortcomings in the other similar inflatables. These included:

Anatomically-flawed body shapes

Absent udders, incorrect number of teats and/or badly-shaped/sharp-seamed teats

Horse-style hooves with no cleft

Additionally, my inflatable cow would have all the advantages of other heavy-duty custom toys, and I would be able to exercise a fine degree of control over the appearance.

I first contacted PuffyPaws in November 2009 and commissioned the concept artwork from Rawr around that same time. We opened the project for pre-orders in February 2010 and the prototyping began in March. The first cow rolled out of the factory in April. I received my consignment of cows in May, with the remainder to be distributed by PuffyPaws in the usual manner.

The cow features overlapping seams, screen-printed artwork and thinner vinyl on the udder. I can't really say a bad thing against it, since i've worked to ensure that it ticks all of my own personal criteria. However, I will say that it is somewhat less ridable than I had intended - the udder does, for all of its merits, get in the way sometimes. It can be deflated, fortunately, and the whole cow can be ridden safely without the need for noticeable deflation. At 4.5ft tall, it's an ideal size as well - neither too small for serious fun or too large for practicality.

Posted on 3 May 2010 in Inflatables - Link to post

Clark Rubber Dolphin (2009 Design)

This is a reboot of Clark Rubber's Intex dolphin clone. In an effort, perhaps, to depart from the Intex artwork, they have opted for a simpler, more orca-inspired pattern. It certainly doesn't look any less like a dolphin; in fact, I think this is a nice touch. The vinyl is a little stiff, but still very nice.
New Glarrus Brewing Cow

This is a promotional inflatable that conforms to a design that has been used several times at varying scales. Inflatable cows are rare, so that makes this toy distinctive, as do the frilly hooves (made from a sliced 'skirt' seam of white vinyl) and the fact that it has an udder. Unfortunately, though, the udder teats are a cheap, unsophisticated oyster-shell shape.

This inflatable combines two things that I love; firstly, it's a dolphin and secondly, it's made of brilliant glossy blue vinyl. Though it bares little resemblance to a dolphin, it's still nice-looking and is nice and big. It has that wonderful sink-into quality shared by other big toys like the Intex Orca.
However, this is in fact a smaller version of the Intex Dolphin. This is most certainly a good thing, as the dimensions of the normal version make it quite unstable on the water. This toy has the same buttery-soft vinyl as its big brother, but only one air chamber instead of three. It's an excellent size for cuddling and makes a great bed companion.

Posted on 20 Dec 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

I'm afraid that I can't tell you much about this toy. I originally thought it was made by Sevylor, however all the print on its underside is in Chinese save for the name and logo of a company called Igarashi.

However, this is a fantastic toy because of the choice of vinyl; it's a brilliant, almost mirror-shine glossy black. The material feels slippery and soft to the touch and reacts very well to a little warmth. This is a real prize in my collection, perhaps not out of rarity or other collector metrics, but simply because it's made of such wonderful vinyl.

Posted on 20 Dec 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Okay, I know what you're thinking... this is a boat, surely? Well yes, but it's every bit as cute and lovable as a ride-on toy.

Essentially a one-person boat (maybe two small children), it is enlivened by the attractive turtle design and features. The vinyl is superb; soft, smooth and wonderfully glossy. It's also just big enough to comfortably accommodate a tired person wanting a nap :)

Posted on 11 Nov 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Intex Sea Turtle (2007)

The original incarnation of this toy was the basis for the Bestway clone. This is the updated design, which ventures a little further into realism; the front flippers are longer and the head is more appropriately "turtley".

As for the properties of this inflatable itself, well, what can I say? It's excellent, just like all of the current Intex range. The vinyl is wonderfully soft, the seams are as closely-trimmed as possible and it holds up to play very well. It's very comfortable to lay on, as well as great to use as a sort-of makeshift blanket in bed.

Posted on 11 Nov 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Jets Zebra (v2.5)
2009-11-04T21:37:44Z
2014-01-03T23:57:22Z

The Jets zebra has gone through a number of iterations since its initial release in the 1990s. This is a third upgrade to the classic design, sparked by the advent of the new manufacturing process Jets use to produce their 'real animals' line of deluxe inflatables.

This inherits some features from its $350USD cousin; namely the jumbo inflation valve (now common on many Jets inflatables, such as the orca), selectively-lapped seams and what Jets call a stronger, more robust type of vinyl... but is something I have mixed feelings about. Yes, the vinyl is tougher than 'pool toy' PVC, but it has a slightly unpleasant gummy feeling to it.

That aside, this is a great toy available for an entry-level price. It's one of the few non-novelty-grade inflatable animals that is designed for use outside of the swimming pool.

Comparison
Click here to see the v2.0 and the v2.5 side-by-side. You will notice that it is slightly taller. The legs are situated closer together to give the appearance of a thinner body. The head is angled slightly higher. The 'webbing' used to reinforce the negative curve on the v2.0's neck is replaced with an overlapping seam on the v2.5.

Posted on 4 Nov 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Its flattened shape makes it very suitable for use in the water, as well as making a good bedtime companion who won't steal all the blankets! ;)

Posted on 28 Sep 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Intex Gecko - "Milo"

<img src="http://www.inflatophin.com/inflatables/image/29/full" title="Intex Gecko - "Milo"" />
This was a pleasant surprise - I ordered this toy along with the deer and magic dragon simply because it was absent from my collection. A number of things strike me, however - the vinyl is wonderfully soft and the choice of contrasting colours is quite striking. The toy is cute and the gecko-paws are adorable. The decision to have such narrow holes between the legs and the body makes for a lot of amusement when squishing them down, too! It's longer than I expected, too. This one is definitely a keeper! :)
<img src="http://www.inflatophin.com/inflatables/image/30/full" title="Merek Tiger - "Benji"" />
I was overjoyed when the opportunity to buy this (rather infamous) inflatable arose; a friend wanted to sell and I had the means to buy.

For those who do not know the background information regarding this toy, it is one of a collection of several limited-run, custom-designed toys manufactured by Jets and sold by Merek/Draco. As such, prices are high, but the build quality is excellent and the toys have been designed specifically to suit the preferences of inflatable enthusiasts.

Therefore, this toy is very attractively shaped, quite enormous, very smooth and unobtrusive, sturdy and heavy-duty.

I cannot say much more about this toy except that is a wonderful addition to the collection and is quickly becoming a favourite of mine.
Puffypaws Husky - "Latté"
2009-09-28T01:19:29Z
2014-01-03T18:53:52Z
<img src="http://www.inflatophin.com/inflatables/image/55/full" title="Puffypaws Husky - "Latté"" />
PuffyPaws Toys is a partnership between inflatable-loving furries on either side of the Atlantic Ocean, whose goal is to design and coordinate the manufacture of fairly-priced, high-quality inflatable toys (with specific appeal to furries who also like inflates).

This husky is their first creation, and it stands as proof of their ethos; this toy has been designed to be attractive, robust, tactile and the perfect size to be widely enjoyed. Although offered only as a limited production run, available to a select group of furs (as well as via later eBay auctions), this toy well-and-truly spreads the message that indulging one's hobbies needn't be a stressful, unpleasant or excessively pricey experience.

The obvious attention to detail is evidenced by the inclusion of paw-pads on the underside of the feet, subtle branding around the valve on the back right leg, lapped seams and unobtrusive valve placement. Care has been taken with the design to avoid extreme negative curves, making it quite possible to ride the husky without fear of doing damage.

Finally, it's CUTE! Amazingly so, in fact. Credit goes to the furry artist who was drafted in to help with this project.

I bought a bulk lot of 40 of these little guys, just for a laugh. They are your typical small, cheap, low-quality, mass-produced inflatable. The pattern is printed out-of-alignment on many of the zebras and some even have big smudge marks on them... but still, you buy enough of these things and you're bound to get a few good ones.

Their most noteworthy physical feature is that there is a squeaker built into one of the rear legs in each zebra.
Whatever its origins, this is an adorable and very snuggly pool toy. The omission of handles makes it very accessible (though perhaps less useful in water) and the wings do not get in the way as with the magic dragon.
Ride-on Walrus (Walmart version)

The walrus design was first drawn to my attention when the Intex 2009 catalogue was posted on a popular inflatables website. I immediately knew that I would have to acquire one. I later learned that the walrus was, in fact, available in three different sizes; a small version for general sale, an intermediate size available in certain places and a large version to be sold exclusively by Walmart in the USA. This is the version I ultimately obtained.

All versions of the walrus come with extremely favourable recommendations from other owners, and based on my own observations, I can only reiterate them.

Highlighting some of the toy's notable features; the combination of glossy blue vinyl, well-reinforced negative curves and an extremely accommodating 'saddle', this toy is a definite success in terms of design and implementation. It also has great appeal to inflatable toy enthusiasts for the same reasons.

Posted on 29 Apr 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Lil' Whale (Walmart version)
2009-04-29T23:06:37Z
2014-01-03T23:47:04Z

To the best of my knowledge, this toy was manufactured by Intex exclusively for Walmart in the USA. It does not seem to be available elsewhere around the world.

So, on first glance, this inflatable seems to be a purple version of the Intex orca, roughly the same size as the lil' blue whale. However, there are some small noteworthy details about this pool toy: It features the new corrugated handles seen on all current Intex toys and, perhaps most importantly, it's made of frosted vinyl.

Those who know me will know that I have had an unfavourable opinion of frosted vinyl based on experience with other brands, however I am hugely impressed by this orca. It's soft, squidgy, slippery and has all the same tactile advantages as matte vinyl... i'm flabbergasted. The only apparent downside to this type of vinyl is that it tends to generate a lot of static electricity. I look forward to seeing how it feels when wet!

So yes, this frosted translucent whale is a winner.

Posted on 29 Apr 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

The dalmatian is a traditionally-constructed inflatable with pinched seams and multiple connected chambers. It is very much in the same vein as the small t-rex.

Having said that, it features a unique fur-textured type of vinyl which is not normally found in conjunction with inflatables. Combined with its good looks, it makes a great low-cost toy.

Posted on 16 Apr 2009 in Inflatables - Link to post

Jets Orca

This is a particularly noteworthy toy because it does a good job at achieving a realistic design. The flatness of the fins (pecs, dorsal and flukes) as well as the tapered shape of the tail makes this inflatable stand out from other orcas. Additionally, the high build quality makes this a toy worth owning.

This dolphin-shaped float has an interesting twist to its design; instead of grab handles, it has connection points for a tow-rope, thus is designed to be pulled along behind a boat or similar.

Although it's clearly designed for function over appearance, the head and flukes are cute!
The modification made to this toy was accidental, but involved expanding the head chamber, the vertical supports tearing during play.
I have taken this inflatable to the beach and found it to be a very good all-round toy in the water.

I will not go into detail, but what I will say is that this toy retains air surprisingly well. I love the udder even though it is anatomically incorrect (6 teats? Seriously, that's not difficult to get right...) and it is rather snuggly too.

This is a classic pool toy, but suffers from some design flaws; namely the negative curves that sit its two riders. The first time I came to sit on this toy, the rear negative curve seam blew out, requiring extensive repairs to fix.
This is an interesting Intex orca clone. It's slightly smaller than the toy whose design it borrows from. The valve placement is interesting - the valve on the tailfluke has been relocated to dead-center, just under the fluke. It seems to have an additional, completely unnecessary air chamber for one of the pec-fins.

All in all, quite a nice toy. If one wanted a pod of orca inflatables, this would be an adolescent, I guess ;)
Intex Magic Dragon

This is a toy with quite a unique design. Although small, it is intricate enough to have several connected air chambers which form various appendages. It is perhaps the most 'draconic' of the various Intex toys that claim to be dragons. The addition of wings is a nice touch. The toy's legs are a very unconventional shape, which add to its collectability. The expression on its face is one of the cuter ones that Intex have achieved.

This toy, I know for a fact, is one of several that get re-badged by the retailers that sell them, usually souvenir or party shops. In this particular case, the dolphin is sold by The Australian Geographic Shop.

It's not a particularly well-made toy, but it is somewhat unique and at least makes an attempt to go for realism, something that dolphins don't get much of when modelled as inflatables.

It's worthwhile to note that I have two of these now, the second was donated by a friend.
Jets T-Rex (34" and 114")

<img src="http://www.inflatophin.com/inflatables/image/24/full" title="Jets T-Rex (34" and 114")" />
Jets manufacture this design in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny (smaller than the 34" one) to ridiculously huge (9.5 feet). I believe there is an intermediate (approx 5 feet) size too.

The 114" version of this toy has a serious awesomeness factor due to its amazing size. It will touch or exceed the height of most rooms and easily takes up all the floor space in a small bedroom.

I suppose there is not much that is remarkable about this toy aside from the size (and the necessary features that accompany it, such as the unconventional valve and weighted feet). Still, it's a great looking dinosaur, stands bipedal and is a good shape for hugging (even if it is too big to fit my arms around!)

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Deep Blue Dolphin (Pink)

Although sold as a 'dolphin', this adorable little ride-on is more of a whale-shape, and is certainly a nod to the Intex orca (from which it takes both its chamber design and eye pattern).

For a budget inflatable ($14.95 from a department store), it's surprisingly nice! Yes, it's small, but it's a lovely shape and is extremely huggable.

Given experience with other toys by Deep Blue, I am going to be careful about folding this one up for storage - the ink can come away and mark other parts of the body if left folded for long periods.
I must say, the dome head makes a wonderful pillow, and this toy is much better for hugs and lounging on than the pirahna. I have no idea what's going on with the printed pattern on it though... I think it's supposed to be some kind of cyborg design?

I've had my sights on this toy for a while and now finally i've been able to track one down. It's a very unique, distinctive design and one of the few good fish toys out there. I was immediately attracted to the enormous dome-shaped mouth, mad-looking teeth and plentiful webbing.

One thing that struck me was just how strong smelling the plasticiser used in the vinyl is. It's so pungent that you could easily get high or go dizzy from sniffing it for too long. The advantage, however, is that the vinyl is very soft indeed.

Keen observers will realise that this toy is in the same product family as the sea dragon and therefore shares some common design features, such as the water-filled chamber on the base that aids in stability in the water. (However, this toy remains unrated until I actually get to try it in the water!)

The shape makes it a little inaccessible as far as hugs (and other things) go, but it more than makes up for this by being such an awesome looking toy.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

I'm told this is a rare find these days, it's successor being smaller and more common. The toy itself is circa 2004 and the box it came in looked somewhat battered and beaten, perhaps having lingered in a shop or warehouse for some time before being put up on eBay.

Anyway, it's the first fish to feature in my collection (excluding the sharks) and it's a nice large candidate. The strong smelling glossy vinyl is lovely and the design is both clever (vertical tailfin adds to the toy's stability when the body squishes down) and cute too.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Recently new to my collection, this lobster is one of the more attractive of the several designs i've seen online.

What makes it particularly good is the vinyl - which is delightfully soft and quite glossy indeed. Sure, it looks a little weird - but so what? It's cute considering lobsters are quite creepy, and it's a very huggable size and shape. Oh, and those flappy webbed bits on either side of the tail are a nice touch!

When I saw these little guys on eBay, I immediately snatched up two. It's rare to find toy versions of common dolphins, they're usually bottlenose or a completely unrealistic design altogether.

They're small and obviously intended to be hung up, but their small size and wonderfully soft vinyl makes them perfect 'inflatable plushies' - great for snuggling! They're also extremely portable, making it possible to carry squeakies around with me if I so desire :)

One of Bestway's rather more unique designs, this shark is aimed at younger children, which makes it a good size for hugging. However, the bizarre decision to have a separate air chamber in only one of the pectoral fins makes it unstable in the water unless both chambers are inflated to precisely equal pressure.

Still, it looks nice and it's pounceable too!

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Finding Nemo 'Bruce' the Shark

I don't often go for movie merchandise, but this toy was given to me by a good friend and i've grown rather fond of it. It does bear a good resemblance to the character in the film Finding Nemo, and it is a pretty rock-solid toy.

Mine arrived with a pinhole-sized puncture, but this was easily repairable and now (thanks in part to its thick vinyl and smooth seams) it retains air impeccably.
Milka Cow

2009-01-02T04:23:42Z

Cows are so hard to find, and aside from cheap novelties, this is the best-known example out there. Someone managed to get ahold of a large number of these limited-production promotional inflatables and now they're spread amongst collectors.

The quality is not great, but they're big and obviously built for longevity. As a hanging inflatable, they don't need to look good up close. The main let-downs from a collector's point of view are the stiff vinyl, weak tail-seam, pointy teats and the bell, which destroys some of its cuteness. Air retention is quite poor on my cow, but I suspect it's been on display during its lifetime.

Interestingly, each pair of legs meets at the middle in a V-shaped join which is structurally solid, but makes the legs difficult to separate or fold down.
Jets Zebra (version 2)

2014-01-03T23:29:54Z

This is a well-known toy that has since been superceded by a thrice-revised model. This version is somewhat infamous for weak seams around the tail and along the huge negative-curve down the back of its neck.

Having said that, it stands out as a huge toy that has an impressive-looking design and manages to pull-off the feat of having long legs that actually support its body quite well. It also scores well on air retention and, all things considered, is very well made.

One of the things it does perhaps too well is that it invites its owner to ride and/or jump onto it!

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Intex Dolphin

Another classic Intex pool toy. In developing a more realistic dolphin shape, they have sacrificed stability in the water, but not by much. This toy is still great in the water, especially for surfing on. It's also the perfect circumference for a good long hug.

Great all-round, classic, iconographic pool toy.

Having such a large main air chamber, you do tend to sink into it, however this does make it a very comfortable toy.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Intex 'lil Blue Whale

2014-01-03T23:29:19Z

In my opinion, this is easily the second-best Intex pool toy (after the black orca). The thinner, translucent vinyl feels wonderful and being smaller makes it more portable, easier to inflate and a more playful size.

Mine has developed a small tear in the tail-seam, so don't let the air retention rating discourage you.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

I'm fortunate enough to own the predecessor to this toy. Personally, I think the new model is a little bit ugly.

Having said that, it is more animal-shaped and a more complex build, with sensibly-placed handles and sturdier construction.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Sunco Hammerhead Shark

2009-01-02T04:24:34Z

When I saw the design of this toy, I just had to have it. And that is really all it has going for it: it's a hammerhead shark and a two-person ride-on.

It is, unfortunately, let down by being a single-chamber toy (and therefore squishy even when full) and is made of really uninviting textured (criss-cross) vinyl.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Intex Dragon Float
2008-12-31T15:22:24Z
2014-01-03T23:28:14Z

I like this toy for three main reasons: Firstly, I think it's cute! Secondly, it's a design that favours function over form. They were tasked with creating a pool float that was dragon-shaped, and the design doesn't deviate from being a float. Lastly, it's medium gloss vinyl is simply delicious to the touch, and is even better when it's been warmed gently by the sun.

A baffling aspect of the design is the choice of two different types of handles, with the rather more painful one located almost dead-center. Otherwise, it's a great all-rounder and a must-have for any collector.

As a side note, I have seen a version of this toy that has red/burgandy frills instead of the pink you see on mine. This is either a regional difference or a different incarnation of the toy.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Deep Blue Whale
2008-12-31T15:21:27Z
2014-01-03T23:27:46Z

The design of this toy seems to be loosely based on the Intex 'lil Blue Whale. The main differences are that it is larger (half-way between the blue and black orcas), has a splash pattern on some places and is a darker colour.

It's clearly produced in a cheaper manner than the Intex equivalent, and it scores poorly in air retention because of that.

Note: The ink printed onto the vinyl comes off easily, and can inadvertently be transferred from one part of the toy to another when storing folded.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Clark Rubber Turtle Float

2011-02-01T20:35:13Z

I believe this is another licensed design, and quite a popular one from what i've seen. It's really quite lovely to look at and its design is simplistic, which works towards its sturdiness and robustness. The shape also makes it very stable in the water. Not so easy to hug this one, but it's great for lying on.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Clark Rubber Shark
2008-12-31T15:17:12Z
2014-01-03T23:25:37Z

I really love this shark, it's easily one of my absolute favourites. It's a great size, good looking, holds a lot of air for its size and two sets of fins placed ideally for riding. (Incidentally, the front fins are enormous, even bigger than the Intex orca's!)

Unfortunately, since the base is so rounded, it's quite unstable in the water - mainly because you're made to sit so high up.
I especially like the vinyl on this one - even though it's not gloss vinyl, it's very smooth and the addition of just a tiny amount of water makes it very slippery.

Finally: I have seen this toy in other people's collections with a different branding - I suspect it's one of a series of inflatables that are on-sold by importers or pool shops (as is the case here in Australia).
Clark Rubber Dolphin

2014-01-03T23:24:57Z

The interesting thing about this toy is its strong resemblance to the Intex dolphin. The only visible differences are:

1) Slightly shorter length
2) More saturated, green-looking colour scheme (markings are very similar)
3) Thicker, stiffer vinyl

Any other remarks would be identical to those given to the Intex model.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post

Bestway Orca

2014-01-03T23:18:42Z

One of many clones of the Intex orca, this one shows its inferior quality. The combination of long, sharp seams and slippery textured vinyl is indicative of this.

It's cute, but this is a surfing toy only.

Posted on 31 Dec 2008 in Inflatables - Link to post
